Performance management, which encompasses setting and managing alignment of goals and business metrics, must walk a careful line. On one side of the line, overly rigid and elaborate metrics can stifle inspiration and creativity. On the other side of the line, loose, unstructured standards (in the name of “empowerment”) can lead to chaos and internal conflict.
